color universal design

color universal design
Did you know that there are individual differences in how colors are perceived? Approximately 3 million people in Japan are said to have color blindness, and it is said that they find it inconvenient to identify their color.
"Color Universal Design (CUD)" is a concept that eliminates such "color barriers" and recommends a way of seeing colors that is gentle and easy for everyone to understand.

color universal design

Universal design is a design that is designed to be easy to use for as many people as possible, regardless of physical ability, age, gender, nationality, etc.
Among these, color universal design focuses on the way colors are seen, and aims to create designs that are easy to see for people with a variety of color vision, and to accurately convey information to everyone.

Color universal design spreading across all industries

Color universal design is spreading across all industries. An increasing number of local governments are formulating color universal design guidelines and promoting the use of printed materials and guide signs that anyone can identify. We are also working on color universal design in a variety of ways, including the printing industry, home appliance manufacturers, food manufacturers, toy manufacturers, and railway operators.

Examples of color universal design initiatives by industry
Industry/Field Examples of initiatives
Administration/local government Brochures, information signs, hazard maps
Home appliances/office equipment Switches, various lamps, remote controls, operation panels
Medical/Food/Beverage Package design, precautions, labels and stickers for drugs and bottled drinks
Transportation/Railway Signs (information signs), route maps
Printing/Advertisement Printed matter, web design, direct mail
architecture Contracts, catalogs, in-store signs
hospital Hospital information sign

There are people who are having trouble because of the difference in the way they see things.

Differences in vision due to differences in photoreceptor cells (color blindness)

The human eye has cones that sense color information. The majority color vision group has three types of cones (tritanopia – Common type: type C), but it differs from type C because it does not have some cones or its spectral sensitivity is shifted. It has a way of seeing colors. It is said that there are approximately 3 million people in Japan who are colorblind, and they find it inconvenient to identify them.

Differences in vision due to aging (senile cataract)

Symptoms of senile cataracts begin to appear in people in their 40s, and almost 100% of people over 80 develop the disease. When the crystalline lens becomes cloudy, symptoms such as decreased visual acuity and blurred vision, and difficulty seeing because light scatters when going out into bright areas appear (vision varies from person to person).

artience group solutions

Uding mark
In 1997, artience group's color management solution was introduced as T-Color, an image color conversion technology that uses neural networks to achieve accurate color reproduction across a variety of output devices™In 2004, we announced the UDing™ series of color universal design support tools that apply this technology. A total of about 15,000 bottles of the series have been distributed, contributing to the spread of color universal design to this day. In 2018, in response to the difficulty of seeing due to cataracts, we began providing the color management solution "Chiarossier™".
Today, we are a color management solution that aims to provide "colors that are friendly to everyone" by integrating color assets such as color technology and various feature data that we have cultivated as a leading manufacturer of printing inks Lioatlas™ are offered.

NPO Color Universal Design Organization

The Color Universal Design Organization (CUDO) is an NPO established in 2004 with the aim of creating a people-friendly society by adapting and improving society to accommodate the diversity of human color vision. We are promoting awareness-raising activities through the issuance of CUD verification and certification marks and the provision of materials related to CUD and color vision. TOYO INK CO., LTD., Ltd. supports CUDO's activities.
