Structural color inks from artience group TOYO INK CO., LTD. (President and Representative Director Hideki Yasuda, Chuo-ku, Tokyo) were used to express the beautiful tail feathers and clouds of Satsuma chickens in Kiyoko Yamazaki's painting "Satsuma Chicken (All Black)", which was selected for the 120th Pacific Exhibition.

The structural color inks developed by artience group do not use dyes such as pigments or dyes and are colored by the diffraction and interference of light from colloidal crystals, which have a three-dimensional regular arrangement of fine particles. In addition to vivid coloring, the visible color changes depending on the angle, allowing for new expressions that are not found in existing art materials.
In Kiyoko Yamazaki's painting "Satsuma Chicken (All Black)", fabrics coated with structural color inks provided by TOYO INK are pasted onto canvas painted with acrylic or oil paints to depict the complex and beautiful tail feathers of Satsuma chickens and the clouds fluttering in the sky.
This work can be seen at the "Pacific Art Association Chiba Branch Exhibition" to be held at the Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art (Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture) from September 2nd to 7th.
As a leading printing inks company, TOYO INK will create value that resonates with the senses by expanding the possibilities of color expression and take on the challenge of realizing a future where all people can live enriched lives.
Kiyoko Yamazaki's comment
With the cooperation of Mr. artience Co., Ltd., we have the opportunity to use structural color sheets for some of our paintings. We would like to express our gratitude once again to everyone involved in the creation of valuable materials. Thank you very much.
The work that used the structural color sheet this time is "Satsuma chicken (total black)". I became interested in oil painting when I painted a large oil painting of Satsuma chicken (Showa 18: designated as a national natural monument), but I wanted to draw a Satsuma chicken that I had never seen before, and when I went to cover the Satsuma chicken competition in Kagoshima, I came across a Satsuma chicken called "Soguro".
Satsuma chicken is available in "white bamboo", "red bamboo", "total black", and "taihaku". The color of the wings of the whole body is all black, but the color changes dramatically from the angle of view, to red, pink, silver, blue, green, and purple. I was overwhelmed and fascinated by its beauty, and when I was looking for a way to express that experience through painting, I came across artience Co., Ltd. 's "structural color sheet". I thought that this structural color sheet is very beautiful and changes color dramatically at the same angle as the total black, and that it would be possible to simulate the change in the way colors appear due to the reflection of light by the structure of the blades.
In addition, Satsuma chickens have a long history, but with the aging of caregivers, there are concerns about the decline in the population. Under such circumstances, I would be very happy if as many people as possible could have the mysterious experience of using beautiful structural color sheets using modern new technology in paintings and changing colors as the viewer moves, and that it would be an opportunity for them to become interested in Satsuma chickens.
