Achieving uniform film thickness even with complex geometries - Features of coatings for electrodeposition coatings

Example of painted products with electrodeposition paint.
Painting on the edge
Electrodeposition coating can form a uniform film thickness even for parts with complex shapes, and its performance far exceeds that of other coating methods. The self-control by the electric field automatically uniformizes the film thickness even in uneven, recessed areas, and edges, resulting in a stable finish regardless of shape.
TOYOCHEM 's electrodeposition coatings can also be applied with thick films while providing high edge coverage and dense deposition. We provide a higher level of uniform film thickness for customers who want uneven quality coatings even with complex geometries.

Uniform film thickness even in complex geometries – excellent edge coverage

Edge coverage in copper square

The figure below shows the coating thickness distribution of the edge when electrodeposition paint is applied to copper square wood. It is possible to paint thick films with a film thickness of about 75 μm in the flat part and about 52 μm in the edge part, and the edge coverage rate reaches about 70%. In general, sufficient coating can be formed even in corners where the film thickness tends to be thin, and both flat thickness and edge coverage can be achieved.

Why electrocoating ensures excellent edge coverage

The reason why electrodeposition coatings can ensure uniform film thickness even with complex shapes is because they have "self-controllability through electric field control". The part where the coating film has begun to be applied increases the electrical resistance, making it difficult for current to flow, and electrodeposition is prioritized in the part where the coating is still thin. This automatically uniforms the film thickness even in areas that are easily affected by shape, such as unevenness, recessed areas, and edges.
Our electrodeposition coatings exhibit high covering properties, which are the advantages of electrodeposition coatings, and can form coating films down to details that are difficult to achieve with solvent-based or powder coatings.

"Frequently Asked Questions" about the uniform film thickness of electrodeposition paints.

There are two main types: cationic electrodeposition and anionic electrodeposition. Our paints are compatible with anion electrodeposition.

The uniform film thickness results in stable insulation and corrosion resistance, significantly reducing the occurrence of defects such as pinholes and leaks. The result is less variability in quality and improved stability during mass production. In addition, problems such as corrosion and appearance defects caused by uneven film thickness can be prevented, which is a great advantage in improving product reliability.

By properly managing voltage, energizing time, and solids, stability at the level of film thickness ± several μm is obtained.

Uniform film thickness is effective in eliminating problems such as insulation defects and leaks, corrosion due to lack of corrosion resistance at the edges, and uneven appearance, which are likely to occur in thin film parts. In addition, stable coatings can be obtained even in areas with complex shapes that are difficult to secure with conventional construction methods, which greatly contributes to improving design reliability.

Product features

The biggest feature of this product is that it can form a uniform film thickness even with complex shapes and dissimilar metals through a unique emulsion design using high molecular weight resin. The stable deposition characteristics of high molecular weight resins enable a homogeneous coating with little unevenness even in uneven areas and intricate structures, and no performance differences.
This uniformity stabilizes functional expressions such as corrosion resistance and insulation, providing high reliability even in demanding applications such as electronic components and mobility components.

Differences from other products

Compared to other companies' general electrodeposition coatings, this product has a major differentiator in that it has excellent film thickness uniformity due to TOYOCHEM 's unique hybrid structure of high molecular weight resin and functionalized resin. High adhesion to metal surfaces and stable current distribution during electrodeposition enable homogeneous deposition that is less affected by shape.
This makes it difficult for uneven performance even with complex shapes, and its ability to stably ensure durability and insulation is a strength that other companies do not have.

Supported materials

TOYOCHEM 's electrodeposition coatings are compatible with various metal materials such as SUS, aluminum, and copper. Suitability and incompatibility vary depending on the type of metal and surface treatment, so please feel free to contact us if you have any concerns.
(* Electrodeposition coating is a technology that forms a coating film by applying electricity to the subject, so it cannot be painted on materials that do not conduct electricity)
