High heat resistance - Features of paints for electrodeposition coatings

Example of painted products with electrodeposition paint.
Examples of painted products with electrodeposition paints
TOYOCHEM 's electrodeposition coatings have a highly viaducted structure through heat curing and dense coating formation, ensuring stable performance even in harsh temperature environments. The design is designed to prevent insulation and metal adhesion to deteriorate even at high temperatures, providing a high-heat resistance solution that can maintain long-term reliability even in electrical and motor components exposed to heat.
If you are looking for a paint that can handle a higher temperature environment, we recommend the newly developed polyimide electrodeposition paint, which is a high heat resistance grade.

Test data on heat resistance

Our electrodeposition coatings can maintain high insulation and metal adhesion even in high-temperature environments. As shown in the test results below, even when a specimen with a film thickness of 20 μm is heated at 160°C and 180°C for 500 hours, the breakdown voltage does not decrease to 4.5~4.8 kV, showing excellent dielectric stability. In addition, the cross-cut adhesion is good in all conditions, and the coating film adheres well to the substrate even after thermal loading.

Why TOYOCHEM electrodeposition coatings ensure high heat resistance

TOYOCHEM 's electrodeposition coatings are able to exhibit high heat resistance due to their unique resin design, which allows epoxy resins to form a high cross-linking structure through heat curing. In addition, the dense and defect-free coating film unique to electrodeposition coating prevents film deterioration due to thermal expansion and gas generation. By combining these factors, electrodeposition coating can maintain stable performance in thermal environments and ensure high thermal reliability.

"Frequently Asked Questions" about the heat resistance of electrodeposition paints

There are two main types: cationic electrodeposition and anionic electrodeposition. Our paints are compatible with anion electrodeposition.

TOYOCHEM 's epoxy electrodeposition coatings have heat resistance of 150-180°C. The newly developed polyimide electrodeposition coating, which is a high heat-resistant grade, can handle thermal environments up to about 200 to 230°C, and can also be applied to high-temperature continuous use in electrical components and motor applications.

Yes. Heat resistance tests have confirmed that even if exposed to an environment of 160 to 180°C for 500 hours, the insulation and adhesion properties will not be significantly reduced. It can reduce the occurrence of film degradation, delamination, and dielectric breakdown, and maintain stable film performance even at high temperatures.

We can propose heat-resistant grades according to the application temperature. We recommend the use of newly developed polyimide electrodeposition paints, which are high heat resistance grades.

There are factors such as the cross-linking density, type, and functional groups of the resin. TOYOCHEM 's electrodeposition paints use a proprietary resin to improve heat resistance. In particular, the newly developed polyimide-based electrodeposition paint, which is a high heat-resistant grade, has a unique resin design that does not impair the heat resistance of polyimide.

Product features

This product has a unique emulsion design using high molecular weight resin, which provides excellent heat resistance that can withstand baking at 200°C. The dense deposition structure of high molecular weight resin suppresses heat deterioration and film shrinkage, forming a stable coating film with high functional retention.
This makes it difficult for performance to deteriorate even in environments where heat loads such as around mobility and electronic components, and is a major feature that ensures long-term reliability.

Differences from other products

Compared to other products, this product is characterized by its unique emulsion structure, which optimally combines high molecular weight resin and functionalized resin, making it less likely to deteriorate or adhere to the film under heat load. The dense coating film formed during electrodeposition makes it easy to maintain the structure even in high-temperature environments, suppressing corrosion resistance and deterioration of insulation.
In particular, since homogeneous deposition can be achieved even with complex shapes and dissimilar metals, uneven deterioration due to heat is less likely to occur, and it stands out from other companies in terms of reliability under high-temperature conditions.

Supported materials

TOYOCHEM 's electrodeposition coatings are compatible with various metal materials such as SUS, aluminum, and copper. Suitability and incompatibility vary depending on the type of metal and surface treatment, so please feel free to contact us if you have any concerns.
(* Electrodeposition coating is a technology that forms a coating film by applying electricity to the subject, so it cannot be painted on materials that do not conduct electricity)

Polyimide Anionic Type Electrodeposition Coating (Development Product)

Painting samples of polyimide anion type electrodeposition paints.
TOYOCHEM 's newly developed polyimide electrodeposition coating is a high-performance coating agent that achieves heat resistance, insulation, and edge coverage that far exceeds that of conventional electrodeposition coatings. The high heat-resistant structure unique to polyimide resin maintains extremely high thermal stability at Tg 200°C or higher and pyrolysis temperature of 400°C or more, and maintains an insulation breakdown voltage of over 10kV even after 220°C ×500h. It is also capable of coating a thick film of 100 μm, which can provide high insulation. In addition, with an edge coverage rate of more than 80%, it can form a uniform insulating film even in complex shapes and corners. The unique self-control of electrodeposition and the uniquely developed polyimide-based resin maintain high adhesion even under harsh temperature environments and shape conditions, and its major strength is that its performance does not deteriorate.
